Retaining Walls Built for Mississippi Rain
Make the Slope Part of the Yard
Maybe the back of the yard drops off too steeply to use, mulch washes onto the driveway after every heavy rain, or an old wall has started to lean.
A retaining wall holds back the soil, but the water behind it does most of the pushing, especially in clay that stays wet long after the weather clears. SchoggenScapes is a retaining wall contractor that builds drainage in behind every wall and plans the slope into the rest of the property.
Our crews work across Madison, Rankin, and Hinds counties, in towns like Clinton, Ridgeland, Flowood, and Gluckstadt.
-
Water that collects behind a wall leans on it every time it rains. Each wall we build gives that water a way out, so it isn't pushing against the wall itself.
-
A wall is only as steady as what's under it. Each one starts on a packed-down base that holds it in place through wet springs and dry Augusts.
-
A structural wall holds a slope back and gives you flat ground in its place: a level stretch of lawn for the kids, room for a patio, or a driveway edge that stops crumbling.
-
A low wall at bench height gives the yard built-in seating that stays put when the party's over.
-
A long slope can be broken into tiers of planting beds. The soil and mulch stay where they belong, and the designer gets room to layer plants instead of fighting the grade.
-
Lights tucked into or beside the wall keep it, and any steps next to it, easy to see after dark.
Inside a Retaining Wall Installation
Show us the slope.
Give us a call at 601-924-2869 or send the contact form, and tell us where the ground falls away and where the water ends up. We'll get back to you by the next business day.
Meet a designer on the hill.
A designer walks the grade with you, finds the source of the runoff, and goes over wall height, placement, and budget. Your consultation fee comes off the project cost when we build it.
Our crew handles every layer.
SchoggenScapes crews take care of the digging, the base, the drainage behind the wall, and any plantings or lighting that go with it. One company answers for the whole job.

Retaining Walls We've Built for Sloped Yards
No two slopes are the same, and neither are the walls that fix them. Here are a few we've built.

Retaining Wall Questions From Homeowners
-
A retaining wall contractor looks at how steep the slope is, what kind of soil it is, where water comes from when it rains, and what the wall will have to hold up. Those answers decide the wall's height, its base, and how much drainage goes behind it. SchoggenScapes looks at all of it on site before anything is designed.
-
Most retaining walls in Central Mississippi lean or crack because water builds up behind them. Wet clay is heavy, so a wall without drainage behind it takes on that weight whenever the ground gets soaked, and over time it starts to tip or bulge. We build drainage into every wall so the water has somewhere to go.
-
A retaining wall can double as seating when it's built to sitting height and finished with a cap wide enough to sit on. Seat walls work well along the edge of a patio or around a fire pit area, where they hold back a grade change and give guests somewhere to land. Our designer plans the height with both jobs in mind.
-
Planting beds, lawn, a patio, and lighting can all go above a retaining wall when it's designed for them. Heavier loads, like a driveway or a structure, change how the wall has to be built, so they need to be planned for from the start. SchoggenScapes designs the wall around whatever will sit behind it.
